A day of
camping on the Meramec just above the "Cardiac" access proved to be very
successful. While large stonefly nymphs were present, small pheasant tails
and copper johns were producing well when fished in fast water with
sufficient weight to get them to the bottom. Throughout the course of the
day I hooked probably 30-40 fish--two or three pushing 20 inches. In fact,
one fast riffle (the location of which I will keep to myself) produced this
24-inch, 5-lb brown caught on a #16 hare's ear nymph. About fifteen minutes
prior to hooking this beauty, I snared another fish on a #18 bead head
pheasant tail. This fish struck in the fast water and brought me down into
a log jam where he snapped my 7X tippet. Angry at myself for losing him, I
continued to work the riffle when sure enough Walter, as I named him,
grabbed my hare's ear. He took about 25 minutes to land and was nearly lost
to the same log jam. I quickly revived Walter and returned him to the river
for the next lucky angler. He was a beauty and it's wonderful to know the
Meramec still holds such quality fish.
